There is feature in mailyoulike for admin's , that they can  log into users account and perfrom all actions as user perform them selves . one of my client  ask me to remove this feature as this not good  and he can go to jail by reading other emails .

My question is  should i remove this feature?

I think that being able to log into a user account is defenitaly a act of breaking in to someones privacy and can get you into a lot of trouble.

http://www.redearthsoftware.com/email-monitoring-article.htm

Employer can monitor the mail of employees if they have a mail policy and/or the employee has agreed to it.

But if you are using MailYouLike like hotmail it would be illegal in my opinion to log into someones account. Or how would you like it if someone at Microsoft had the abbility  to log into your mailbox and read it.

OK you are right, you can still access the messages in your DB and read them there. Right but that needs more (criminal) activity to do so then just to click on a button.

So for me it is clear. Admins do not need the ability to log into users accounts. I can not think of any case where this would make sence.

The function should BE REMOVED immediately.

Markus

Legallity issues aside.

How many people actually want someone reading their mail. And how many people would really want to sign up for an account knowing that their emails could be read any time by an admin.

I know that I wouldn't want someone reading my emails. Even though my government scans through all of mine. It is still not 1 person reading what I recieve.

Id echo the above comments. It does seem like a very unethical feature. Remove it, thats what I say. It wont effect any of the core functionality of the email system so why have it there.

I have been running mail servers since 1995.

While it is not appropriate to simply read people's mail, it is often important to assist people with their mail. Times may come where an attachment doesn't download right or something goes amiss. You need to access their account for them.

Since you are the admin, you own the database. You can look at anyone's mail by simply scanning the DB. You don't do that for ethical and legal reasons. But to take away the ability from admins and all you really do is limit their ability to help people.

If people don't know you can read their mail, as the mail admin, they have a misunderstanding of how mail systems work. I have thousands of email accounts I administer. I could care less what is in these boxes. I do care if I can help my customers out when they need help.

Hi David

I agree that the mail is still in the DB and since one is the admin and owns the DB one can access it with ease.

Nevertheless if I had a problem and would call up my admin and he would access my Mail without even asking for login and passwort it would strike me strange.

Also a user can allways provide login and password to admin to have him access and change it later (yes I know - you have access to the DB)

But still I would feel more komfortable.

And thinks about all those admins that have not worked with mail servers for years. They might be tempted.

I vote for removing the option
